I adopted Willie this past weekend ... he comes from a three-pig home near Peterborough ON. They were owned by a 90-year old woman, now in a nursing home. He is about 9 years old ... his "sisters" were starting to boss him around (which helped him lose weight he needed to lose) ... they have been placed on an organic vegetable farm near me.
Willie is very sweet-natured. He walks stiffly, suggesting arthritis - prob exacerbated by his previous obesity. I have started him on Glucosamine + Chondroitin + MSM, plus cranberry capsules (for urinary health - male pigs can be prone to crystals), plus Vitamin E and a child's chewable multiple each day. I also put his food in about 1 litre of apple juice/water mixture - to encourage him to drink enough (and get used to our sulphur-y water!). Phew!
He doesn't seem to see very well - he still has a number of skin folds on his face, partially obscuring his eyes. He does, however, seem to see shadows and shapes.
Willie is housed next to Daisy, in the hopes that they will become friends. For now, she is being a little bossy with him (thru the barrier, of course!). It is, after all, her turf.
