So, last Wednesday, I was showing some family friends thru my barns, when we noticed a couple of pretty steady leaks in the ceiling of my smaller barn - the one that houses the chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, and three pigs: Pinky, Truffle, and Toad.
I thought it was just an accumulation of snow and ice on the roof that was starting to melt. I was right - sort of. It was an accumulation of snow and ice on the roof that had caused the roof to CAVE IN ... and was melting.
Crap.
Luckily, the ceiling of the animal space was intact, so the worst the critters suffered was some wet bedding. I put buckets under the worst drips, rearranged some pens, and changed bedding.
Ian and I shovelled the snow off the roof - over 2-ft thick in places, with a nice layer of ice under it all. We have had a record snowfall this year - over 400 cm (about 3.5 yards) - and I *had* been watching the rooves - but hadn't actually checked the west side of this roof until it was too late. Live & learn.
Thankfully, our carpenters were able to come out yesterday and today and repair the damaged rafters, replace the wrecked tin, and reinforce the whole roof structure. Better than new.
Close call.
Only downside: Rearranging rabbit pens meant that one of my two Rex girls (who seem to be able to jump out of anything) insisted on getting out and fraternizing with an un-neutered male ... Not sure if anything was consummated, but I will be calling the vet to arrange some speedy spays. Don't need rabbit kits!
